Dry, flaky scalp and dull, lackluster hair can be caused by several factors, including genetics, environment and hair care products. Occasionally, a dry, itchy scalp can be due to a medical condition and should be treated by a doctor. When looking for dry hair and scalp remedies, the Mayo Clinic suggests trying home remedies for several weeks before consulting a doctor, unless there is evidence of infection or disease.

Coconut Oil

The National Institutes of Health reported that, "Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft." The ability to penetrate the hair shaft means the moisture gets into hair and doesn't just sit on the outside of the shaft, which can weigh hair down.
To moisturize with coconut oil, warm about 1 tbsp. per 3 inches of hair. Apply warm, liquid oil to dry or damp hair, and cover with plastic wrap or a shower cap for about 20 minutes. Wash hair with shampoo and condition with a daily conditioner.

Moisturizing Shampoos

Dry hair and scalp can occur due to frequent washing with products that strip hair of natural oils, as well as with the use of chemicals to curl, straighten or color hair. Styling aids, such as blow dryers, curling and flat irons, can also deplete hair's moisture. Moisturizing shampoos can help cleanse hair of dirt and impurities without stripping it of its natural moisturizers.
Look for gentle shampoos that contain nourishing ingredients like hydrolyzed wheat and other proteins, amino acids, keratin, panthenol, ceramides and silicone.

Dandruff Shampoos

Dandruff can occur when the scalp is overly dry, as well from a number of other conditions. If dry scalp is causing flakes and itching, a dandruff shampoo may be able to restore lost moisture. The Mayo Clinic says that dandruff from dry scalp is generally smaller and less oily-looking than dandruff from other causes. For dandruff that is due to dry scalp, try a tar-based dandruff shampoo that slows how quickly scalp skin cells die and flake off.

Protect

Haircity.com says it is better to protect than correct. They suggest using a conditioner every day, giving hair and scalp a final rinse with cool water to lock in moisture, and using a deep moisturizing conditioner once a week. Other suggestions for protecting hair and scalp from moisture loss include minimizing the use of hot water on hair and scalp, reducing the use of heated styling appliances, and running a humidifier during cold winter months to replace moisture in heated air.
