There are many types of mountain bikes designed for varying off-road activities. Mountain bikes are built to handle trail and off-road conditions while racing, everyday use or trail riding. Finding the type that fits your needs and riding style can make riding the mountain bike much more enjoyable.
Hardtail
Hardtails have a suspension fork on the front wheel and no suspension in the rear. These bikes are typically used for smooth trails and are more durable than full-suspension mountain bikes. With the limited suspension, there is no wasted energy in the suspension during fast, smooth rides.
Full-Suspension
Full-suspension mountain bikes have suspension forks over the front and rear tires. Because of the increased suspension, they are more comfortable to ride over uneven terrain. The suspension is designed to be adjusted or turned off, and it provides protection against rocks and bumps. Full-suspension bikes require more maintenance than hardtails.
Cross Country (XC)
The most traditional mountain bike is a cross country (XC). It makes a fine all-around bike, and typically weighs 20 to 30 lbs. With the lightweight frame, it works for climbing and control and is designed for general trail use. XC bikes can come with 24 to 27 gears and is available in full-suspension or hardtail designs.
Downhill
Downhill mountain bikes are built to move fast down hills. The bigger tires and heavier weight--typically 40 to 50 lbs.--make it ideal for fast mountain descents. With a limited selection of gears, downhill mountain bikes are tough to maneuver up a mountain. Components of downhill bikes are hydraulic disc brakes and a full-suspension with about 7 to 10 inches of suspension in the rear.
All-Mountain
A cross between XC and downhill bikes is the all-mountain. Bike companies started to produce the all-mountain in response to bike riders who wanted the features of downhill and XC bikes. All-mountain bikes are heavier and more durable than XC bikes with 24 to 27 gears with a full suspension of 5 to 7 inches. The all-mountain bike is built for someone who wants an all-around mountain bike that will go downhill and over jumps but also can climb.
