The tangy yet semi-sweet taste of the grapefruit attracts fruit lovers of all kinds. In addition to enjoying the taste of grapefruit, those who consume it will also enjoy a variety of health benefits associated with this popular fruit.

Vitamin C

Like other citrus fruits, grapefruits are packed with vitamin C. Vitamin C carries critical disease-fighting properties, helping people fend off all kinds of disease, from the common cold to some forms of cancer. It can also help with the absorption of iron into the bloodstream, help produce collagen in the skin and fight against infection. The World's Healthiest Foods reports that the average grapefruit can contain as much as 78 percent of the average person's daily vitamin C requirements.

Lycopene

Grapefruits are rich in lycopene, one of the body's most critical antioxidants. It can help fight cell damage and protect the body against free radicals, which can damage cells and lead to cancer and other illnesses.

Cholesterol

Grapefruits contain pectin, a soluble fiber known to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol in the body. For this reason grapefruit is a sensible part of a cholesterol-conscious diet.

Hydration

The Florida Grapefruit website reports that grapefruit juice has a high water content and high levels of potassium, one of the body's most important electrolytes. Squeezing an 8-oz. glass of grapefruit juice into your day can aid in re-hydrating the body after a long workout, or on days when you just haven't hydrated enough.
