Grape juice is made from crushing the flesh, skin and seeds of red, purple or green grapes. The skin and seeds of dark red and purple grapes contain antioxidants such as resveratrol, which help to decrease the body's harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Other antioxidants in the grapes, such as flavnoids, work to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the type of cholesterol that is beneficial to the body. Drinking red wine in moderation can improve cholesterol, blood pressure and heart health. By drinking grape juice regularly, you can experience the benefits of red wine without consuming alcohol.
Step 1
Choose purple grape juice over red or white juice to lower cholesterol. Find grape juice that is 100 percent juice, without added sugars. The Mayo Clinic notes that Concord grape juice contains higher amounts of resveratrol.
Step 2
Drink at least one to two 8-oz. glasses of grape juice each day.
Step 3
Continue drinking the juice until you see a lowered cholesterol level. This could take several months.
Tips and Warnings
- Drinking grape juice may also help to lower the risk of clogged arteries, prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce blood clots and maintain blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic. You can also eat whole grapes as a snack to experience some of the health benefits, including reduced cholesterol.
