Leucovorin is a prescription medication used to reverse the action of folic acid antagonists, such as methotrexate, trimethoprim and pyrimethamine. The folic acid antagonist blocks the formation of folic acid, an essential nutrient, and leucovorin, in turn, supplies the necessary chemical needed. It is also used in anemia when folic acid is deficient. Nutritional deficiency may require leucovorin when folate therapy is not possible. In colorectal cancer, leucovorin is administered with fluorouracil. According to Drug Information Online, leucovorin displays minimal to no side effects when given in small doses. However, keep in mind that side effects may occur differently in every individual.
Allergic Reactions
Leucovorin has the potential to cause an allergic reaction, including rash, swelling and itchiness. Urticaria, another name for hives, and chest tightness are signs of a serious allergic reaction and should receive medical attention immediately. Another severe allergic reaction is swelling in lips, mouth and tongue.
Thrombocytosis
Thrombocytosis is a condition in which the body produces too many platelets; platelets are found in the blood and play an important role in the clotting process. There are no symptoms for this condition and will be diagnosed upon a blood test. This appears to occur rarely, although the frequency is not defined. Furthermore, when leucovorin is administered with fluorouracil, this side effect may be seen at a higher rate. Difficultly arises when judging which medication produces the side effect. However, your physician will provide you with the necessary care if this side effect occurs.
Wheezing
Wheezing has been reported in individuals administered leucovorin. The frequency of occurrence is not defined, as reported in the "Drug Information Handbook." Although it appears to be a rare side effect, keep in mind that wheezing can be a sign of other conditions, such as asthma or upper respiratory infection. It is therefore important to seek medical advice if the wheezing is bothersome and persistent.
