Playing basketball at a high level requires staying on top of your game. There are drills that players can do to improve their shooting, ball-handling, rebounding and defense. Additionally, a few key tips can help players understand the game better and make them more efficient in their on-court performance.
Shooting Drill
To build confidence in your shooting, come on to the court before the start of practice and start shooting 4-foot shots. Take 10 shots from that distance before moving 2 feet back. Take 10 shots from 6 feet out as well. Do the same from 8 and 10 feet. This will help you build confidence in your shot, and it will make you feel better before the start of practice or before the start of the game. After taking these shots, go through your regular drill of shooting from the right baseline, the right elbow, the top of the key, the left wing and the left baseline.
Defensive Drill
This is a two-on-one drill that promotes hustle and intelligence on the court. The point guard will come over halfcourt with the ball to start the drill. He and his teammate must complete three passes before shooting. Your job is to stop them from scoring. Since you are at a major disadvantage, your goal is to register three stops on every 10 attempts.
Chang-of-Direction Dribble
One of the keys to becoming an effective offensive player is to be able to beat your opponent off the dribble. One of the ways to do this is with the change-of-direction dribble. It works like this: You come in dribbling straight at your opponent and when you get within 4 feet of him, you switch hands and quickly dribble to the right or left. This will give you an opening to take it to the basket or get free for the jump shot.
