Norvasc is the United States brand name of amlodipine. It is a prescription-only medication used in the treatment of hypertension, or high blood pressure, and pain in the chest known as angina. Norvasc, a medicine called a calcium channel blocker, works to decrease the constriction of blood vessels and heart cells. It also helps to increase the oxygen and blood supply to the heart, making it easier for your heart to function.
Swelling
The most common serious side effect of Norvasc, the Mayo Clinic reports, is swelling. This typically occurs in the feet and ankles. This is an indication that something is wrong in the body, so consult your physician as soon as possible if it occurs. Swelling also may occur in areas of the face such as the tongue, lips and mouth if you are allergic to the medication. The gums also may swell when taking Norvasc.
Chest Side Effects
Other serious common side effects of Norvasc, Drugs.com notes, include problems in the chest and heart. The pain in your chest--angina--may increase when you take the medicine. You may feel as if your chest is pounding as a side effect. Two forms of direct heart problems also may occur. Your heart may "skip" a beat now and then and not beat regularly. The other side effect is called tachycardia, a medical term that means the heart rate is increased. Contact your physician immediately or go to the emergency room if these types of adverse side effects occur.
Jaundice and Bleeding
Taking Norvasc may affect the function of the liver, in which case jaundice may develop. This condition is characterized by the whites of your eyes or your skin turning yellow. There also is the potential for bleeding from your gums, and your gums may be tender. Get medical help immediately for these side effects.
Other Side Effects
Norvasc may induce some types of side effects that are quite common but are not serious. These typically do not require medical aid unless they bother you significantly or they continue past the first few days of acclimating to amlodipine. You may, for example, feel dizzy from the drug, or you may get overly tired when first taking it and your body may become fatigued, even without strenuous exercise, work or activity. You may get sick to your stomach or experience pain in your stomach. You also may get a headache from Norvasc, and your body may flush, meaning your skin gets warm and red suddenly.
