Imodium (loperamide hydrochloride) is a medication used to treat symptoms associated with diarrhea that is available either over-the-counter or by prescription. This medication is administered orally (capsule, tablet or liquid) and should only be taken as directed. Before beginning treatment with Imodium, be sure to review the precautions detailed in the packaging information that is provided with this medication.

Allergy

Certain patients may experience a rare allergic or anaphylactic reaction after taking Imodium. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the mouth or face, skin rash (hives), breathing difficulties, dizziness or loss of consciousness. Such a reaction can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical intervention.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor if you are taking additional over-the-counter or prescription medications before you begin using Imodium. P-glycoprotein inhibitors, such as quinidine or ritonavir, can increase the amount of Imodium within your blood, thereby abnormally enhancing the effects of this medication, health professionals at Drugs.com explain.

Pregnancy

Before taking Imodium, be sure to let your doctor know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant. If possible, the use of this medication by pregnant women should be avoided, as its effect on the developing fetus is poorly understood. Use of this drug during breastfeeding is not advised, as breast milk can contain small concentrations of Imodium in mothers who take this medication.

Side Effects

While taking this medication, you can develop certain side effects that may be uncomfortable. Imodium can cause drowsiness or dizziness in some people. After taking a dose of Imodium, care should be taken while driving or operating machinery to avoid accidental injury. Additional side effects associated with Imodium use include dry mouth, stomach discomfort, constipation or vomiting.

Dehydration

The American Cancer Society warns that prolonged diarrhea leads to fluid depletion within the body, which can cause dehydration. While taking Imodium, be sure to drink at least 2 to 3 quarts of fluid every day to ensure that your body remains hydrated.

Alcohol Use

Drinking alcohol while receiving Imodium treatment can worsen fatigue-related side effects. Alternative fluid sources, such as water or juice, are recommended to help you remain hydrated while you are experiencing diarrhea.

Fever

Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a fever or blood in your stools after taking a dose of Imodium. Such symptoms may indicate a more-severe medical problem.
