Athlete's foot is a painful and unsightly infection in the skin prominent in the heel of the foot. The infection is characteristically caused by walking around with bare feet and bad foot hygiene. It also can be transmitted from person to person. Thankfully, there are many treatments for athlete's foot and the cracked heels that come along with it.

Prevention

The best medicine is always prevention. Preventing cracked heels is as simple as not sharing personal items such as socks, towels are shoes, as these are mediums for the infection to travel through. Cleaning the bathroom with a good disinfectant will also stop transmission of the disease from one person to another.

Topical Medication

Cracked heels can be treated with over-the-counter drugs found at your regular drug stores. Athlete's foot sprays are excellent for killing the infection, while topical creams will heal broken skin. Moisturizers such as cocoa butter and shea butter and will help with physical appearance of the skin.

Oral Medication

For those who would like something a little bit more powerful, consult a dermatologist. The dermatologist can provide a prescription for oral drugs that will kill the internal infection, preventing the reoccurring of future outbreaks.
