Blackheads are a form of acne that are also referred to as open comedones. A blackhead occurs when the pores of the skin become clogged with a buildup of oil and dead skin cells. When the oil that is clogged in pores becomes exposed to the air, it becomes blackened in appearance. Ingredients in over-the-counter acne topical treatment products can be used to get rid of blackheads. If they are not successful, blackhead extraction products such as pore strips can be used.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is an ingredient that when exposed to the skin can help shed dead skin cells that have become clogged in the pores. It can reduce the amount of oil on the skin and exfoliate the area to prevent new eruptions of blackheads. Salicylic acid is available in over-the-counter pads, gels, creams and washes. If you experience any side effects, discontinue use or reduce the number of times applied daily. Potential side effects include redness and skin irritation.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a common ingredient in blackhead topical treatment products. Benzoyl peroxide can prevent the spread of acne-causing bacteria and remove dead skin cells to prevent and treat comedones. The ingredient can cause skin irritation and sun sensitivity, so sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher should be worn during active use. Other side effects include dryness and redness. Limit exposure to clothing items, since the ingredient can cause discoloration.

Sulfur

Sulfur is another common ingredient found in blackhead and acne-fighting treatment products. Because of the unpleasant smell, it is not commonly found as the lone active ingredient. It is typically combined with either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to combat comedones. Sulfur helps dry out excess oil on the skin and peel away dead skin cells that are blocking pores.
