A TENS unit, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a portable battery-powered device that delivers mild electrical signals to control pain and promote soft-tissue healing. According to Drugs.com, a TENS unit can lessen short-term pain and chronic pain. However, a recent article in the Journal Neurology recommends that TENS should not be used for chronic low back pain, but should be considered in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy. Therefore, ongoing research is attempting to learn when TENS electrotherapy is most effective. Follow these guidelines to make sure TENS is effective in treating your condition.
Before Beginning TENS Therapy
Step 1
Remove the TENS battery from the charger and make sure it is fully charged. Make sure the control knob is off before beginning TENS electrotherapy, as recommended by Drugs.com.
Step 2
Clean the area in which you will be applying the TENS electrodes with rubbing alcohol. Make sure your skin is dry before placing the electrodes.
Step 3
Place a thin coat of TENS gel on the bottom of each electrode to help the electric current transmit through your skin. Avoid applying too much gel.
Step 4
Place the electrodes on the skin before attaching them to the TENS unit. Place them around the area that is being treated.
During TENS Therapy
Step 1
Connect the electrode wires to the TENS unit. Make sure your connections are tight and correct.
Step 2
Set the intensity to the level recommended by your doctor. Use the TENS unit for the length of time recommended by your doctor. Attach the TENS unit to your belt for long-term use.
Step 3
Use soap and water to clean your skin and electrodes immediately after use. Replace the unit battery with a charged battery. Attach the used battery to your charger.
Step 4
Follow your doctor's treatment plan to ensure maximum recovery from your condition
