A foot massage may be just what your feet need at the end of a long day. Foot massages can alleviate foot aches and even pain in the legs and back. Massage has a relaxing effect that can help to reduce stress as well. The best advantage is you can learn to give yourself a relaxing foot massage in the comfort of your own home. Taking an hour to massage your feet can help you sleep better, too.

Step 1

Soak your feet in warm water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Place some bubble bath or aromatic bath oils in the water to help you relax. Use a scented foot massage lotion for a more relaxing massage. The warm water will soften your feet. Give yourself a mini pedicure by trimming your toenails. Pat your feet dry before beginning your massage.

Step 2

Place your feet on a soft towel. Use lots of massage oil or lotion as you massage one foot at a time, then switch feet. Sweep your hands gently up and down both sides of each foot, applying only minimal pressure. Move your hands in one direction and then work your way back in the opposite direction. Do this several times to increase blood flow in your feet and toes.

Step 3

Slide your hand from the top of your toes back toward your ankle. Increase the pressure with your thumbs, as you work up and down. Move your hand to the bottom of your foot so that you can begin working your hands and thumb from the heel of your foot. Move on to the sole of your foot, and then to the underside of your toes. Apply more pressure on the heel. Switch to the other foot and repeat this pattern.

Step 4

Make a fist with your hand to prepare to knead the sole of your feet. Begin with one foot. Using your knuckles, knead the sole of your foot in much the same way you would knead dough for baking. Knead from the sole of your foot up to your toes. Do the same on the opposite foot.

Step 5

Massage the toes on each of your feet. Take each toe in between your thumb and forefinger and make a circular motion. Rotate three times in one direction, then three times in the other direction. Apply gentle pressure to each of your toes. You can also rub the toes on each foot between both your hands.

Step 6

Cup each foot with your two hands. Move your hands up and down your foot while at the same time applying pressure. Concentrate pressure and the massaging action on the sides of the foot. After massaging one foot for a few minutes, move to the other foot. Rub moisturizing lotion on each foot after you complete the massage.
