The heart pumps blood throughout the body to deliver life-sustaining oxygen and nutrients to the cells, tissues and organs. To keep the heart healthy it is important to eat foods that contribute to its health, and avoid foods that could put you at risk for heart disease.
Fatty Foods
Foods that are high in saturated fats and trans fats raise your blood cholesterol levels. To reduce your risk of heart disease and maintain a healthy heart, avoid purchasing and consuming foods that have a high fat content such as red meats, baked foods or goods, chocolate, dairy products and deep-fried foods.
Salty Foods
High levels of sodium in the body are associated with hypertension. Hypertension can cause heart failure. Avoid buying or consuming canned or frozen foods that are high in sodium and adding too much salt to your foods. Doing this may reduce your risk of developing hypertension and heart disease.
Low Fiber Foods
Coronary heart disease is described as the leading cause of death in The United States by the Harvard School of Public Health. A diet high in fiber reduces the risk of developing coronary heart disease. To maintain a healthy heart, it is beneficial to avoid eating excessive amounts of foods that are low in fiber such as white rice, canned fruits, canned vegetables, pulp-free juice and foods made from white flower like pasta and noodles.
