Indigestion (dyspepsia) is a feeling of discomfort or upset in the stomach. It is not classified as a disease but a symptom or collection of symptoms that occur as a result of an illness or a reaction to medication. Other symptoms that sometimes accompany indigestion include belching, bloating and nausea. These symptoms can be chronic and occur mainly after meals. There are many medicines on the market to treat indigestion.

Gaviscon

Gaviscon is an antacid that works to neutralize large amounts of acid in the stomach. Gaviscon comes in chewable tablet form. It contains sodium bicarbonate, magnesium, alginic acid and aluminum.
Possible side effects include diarrhea, constipation, hives, nausea and vomiting. Some side effects may be severe and should be reported to your physician.

Pepcid

Pepcid (famotidine) belongs to a group of drugs called histamine-2 blockers. Histamine-2 blockers work to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Pepcid is used in the treatment of acid reflux and the prevention of ulcers in the stomach and intestines.
Possible side effects include dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, seizures and confusion. Some side effects may be serious and should be reported to your physician.

Prilosec

Prilosec (omeprazole) reduces the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach. It is used to alleviate symptoms of acid reflux disease and other issues involving stomach upset. Prilosec is available over the counter, but there are stronger forms that may be prescribed by a physician.
Prilosec side effects may include headache, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain and gas.

Milk of Magnesia

Magnesium hydroxide, more commonly known as Milk of Magnesia, is used for a variety of stomach complaints. Magnesium reduces stomach acid, increases the amount of water in the intestines and may also cause the body to have a bowel movement. It can be used as a laxative to relieve bouts of constipation.
Magnesium is a mineral that is found in food and can be taken in supplement form.
Difficulty breathing and swelling of the face and tongue are severe side effects that may occur. If you experience any type of side effect, you should consult your physician immediately.

Zantac

Zantac is classified as a histamine-2 blocker that is used to treat excessive amounts of stomach acid. Zantac is used to alleviate heartburn, as well as gastrointestinal acid reflux.
Possible side effects include headache, drowsiness, chest pain, diarrhea and decreased sex drive. If any side effect becomes severe or is out of the ordinary, report it to your physician immediately.
