Karate is a martial art that has its origins in Japan. It is a weaponless means of self-defense. Common moves in this martial art include blocking and/or evasive movements, punches, strikes and counter attacks using kicks. People usually practice karate as a way of staying healthy, as a sport or as a form of self-defense. Karate can develop your flexibility and strength while challenging your brain, since it requires agility and steady mental alertness. This martial art is usually taught in martial art schools or fitness clubs, though these can be expensive. Fortunately, you can learn karate in the comfort of your own home.

Step 1

Purchase a karate instructional book which contains pictures outlining each movement. For example, "Karate Basics" by Robin L. Rielly and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Karate" by Randall G. Hassell are good introductory books. Some karate books also come bundled with video or audio aids.

Step 2

Learn karate online. There are innumerable karate videos, Internet groups and bulletin boards (see Resources). Interact online with fellow karate trainees through message boards and ask questions about the karate movements you are unclear about during your training at home.

Step 3

Rent a DVD about karate at your local library or movie rental store and watch it at home. Look for a DVD that is more current for better production quality. While watching, write down which movements you find confusing, then view these scenes over and over again until you understand what's involved.

Tips and Warnings

  • Find and practice with a partner for a third-person visual interpretation of karate movements.
  • Talk to your doctor to find out if your are fit enough to start a karate program.
