Growing your hair longer doesn't involve special ointments or pills. Instead, you need to begin practicing some simple, common-sense habits on a daily basis to care for your hair. In return, your hair will respond by getting healthier and stronger, and growing longer. As your hair grows, the longer hairs are the older ones. Even commonplace hair care activities such as brushing lead to the eventual erosion of each hair shaft, resulting in the breaking of that hair shaft.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair with a mild shampoo. Make sure the shampoo is formulated especially for your hair type, whether you have dry, oily or normal hair. Don't wash your hair every day. Instead, shampoo every other day.

Step 2

Apply conditioner to your hair every time you shampoo. Beginning at the level of your ears, gently massage the conditioner down to the ends of your hair. Leave it in for at least two minutes, then rinse it out completely.

Step 3

Use a wide-tooth comb to comb and untangle your hair. Starting at the bottom of your hair, gently comb and remove tangles, moving up toward your scalp as you comb. Refrain from using hair brushes as much as possible.

Step 4

Avoid using high-heat hair care stylers as much as you can. Hair dryers, curling irons and flat irons all use high temperatures which dry each hair shaft and cause damage to the cuticle of the hair shaft.

Step 5

Have your hair trimmed regularly. Ask to have 1/2 to 1 inch trimmed every 10 to 12 weeks to rid yourself of split ends.

Step 6

Pay attention to your diet. What you put in your body is reflected in your hair's health. Foods rich in vitamins, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and good protein sources such as eggs, can speed up hair growth.

Step 7

Encourage good blood flow to your scalp with regular exercise. Massage your scalp on a regular basis.

Tips and Warnings

  • Split ends are the signs of hair breakage. Look through your hair frequently; when you see these ends appearing, have your hair trimmed.
  • No quick fixes exist to make your hair grow quickly. Your hair grows an average of 1/2 an inch per month. Harsh chemicals, such as those used in perms and hair-coloring products, also damage the shaft of the hair.

Things You'll Need
