Ibuprofen is an oral analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication indicated for the alleviation of symptoms associated with fever, pain and inflammation. This medication is a member of a class of drugs called nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acts by inhibiting an enzyme (cyclooygenase) involved in the production of pain and inflammation within the body. Ibuprofen is available either over-the-counter or by prescription, and is administered orally (tablet, chewable tablet, liquid). This medication should be taken only as directed to avoid developing adverse effects of ibuprofen.

Upset Stomach

While taking ibuprofen, you can develop stomach-related side effects. Such side effects can include abdominal gas or bloating, upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation, explains Drugs.com, a peer-reviewed drug information website. Certain people can also experience heartburn---which can cause uncomfortable, burning or painful sensations within the chest---after taking a dose of ibuprofen. These side effects are typically mild and can be limited by eating a small snack or meal before taking your dose of ibuprofen. Prolonged or excessive use of ibuprofen can damage the lining of your intestinal tract, causing ulcers to form. Speak with your doctor immediately if you develop severe nausea, vomiting or black, bloody stools while receiving treatment with ibuprofen.

Tinnitus

Treatment with ibuprofen can cause ear-related side effects to develop in certain people. After taking a dose of ibuprofen, you may experience abnormal sensations---such as ringing or buzzing---within one or both or your ears. This condition is known as tinnitus, and typically subsides within recurrent ibuprofen treatment.

Skin Rash

You can develop a skin rash while receiving treatment with ibuprofen. Skin rash symptoms can include red, irritated, inflamed, itchy or dry patches of skin. Such symptoms are typically mild and resolve once ibuprofen treatment has ended. If you develop severe blisters, skin peeling or an extensive rash while taking ibuprofen, contact your doctor immediately.

Blurred Vision

Ibuprofen treatment can cause vision problems to develop in some patients. You might experience blurred or double vision while taking ibuprofen, which may interfere with your ability to walk or drive normally. Such side effects are typically mild and resolve shortly after dosing. Vision difficulties can be accompanied by additional side effects, including headache, dizziness or nervousness.
