A Pilates reformer is a piece of exercise equipment designed to provide a full-body workout that emphasizes core strength, spinal alignment and flexibility. While Pilates reformers may vary in their construction, a reformer generally consists of a sliding platform controlled by a series of pulleys, ropes or leather straps. In more advanced models, you can adjust the resistance, which allows you to increase a Pilates session's effectiveness as you grow in your Pilates practice.

Improve Spinal Alignment

Pilates strengthens the muscles of the core, which includes the muscles around the spine. This enhances the stability of the spinal muscles and the stretching that occurs when a person uses the reformer. Proper posture is required to perform these exercises and emphasized when practicing Pilates. For this reason, exercising on the reformer helps to emphasize alignment.

Improve Range of Motion

Joseph Pilates, the inventor of Pilates, began teaching his exercises using springs attached to hospital beds, according to Pilates.com. This inspiration for the Pilates reformer allowed patients to improve range of motion thanks to the ability to perform controlled movements adjusting the resistance of the Pilates reformer cables.

Strengthen the Core

The principles of Pilates rest upon the core, which includes the abdominal muscles and back. Nearly all Pilates exercises rely upon a strong core and working the core muscles. Examples of core-improving Pilates exercises include the hundred, the roll up, the can can and the saw. Benefits of a strong core include improved posture, better athletic performance and reduced risk of back pain.

Improve Flexibility and Tone

A Pilates reformer is designed to gently stretch the muscles. Through the use of the cables and pulleys to provide resistance, you can better hold a stretch. The stretching aspect of using a Pilates reformer allows you to develop long, lean muscles which give you a graceful or non-bulky appearance. The improved physical appearance of a Pilates reformer user is one of the practice's chief benefits.

Stress Reduction

Exercising on a Pilates reformer is designed to follow a fluid set of movements that promote a stronger, more flexible body. These movements also help to reduce stress and relieve tension in the body. While a strenuous practice, Pilates is a relaxing way to stretch and strengthen the body.
