1. The Big Picture
What qualifies as a medication? A complete list is probably longer than you think and includes any prescriptions you take, herbal supplements, vitamins and any over-the-counter drugs you use on a regular basis. Start by making a full list of all medications.
2. Slim Down the Medicine Cabinet
Medications can pile up. It's easy to end up with a medication cabinet full of outdated drugs. Go through the cabinet at least once a year and discard any drugs that have expired. The expiration date means the medication will be effective until that date, if stored under the proper conditions of light, temperature and moisture. If not stored under suggested conditions, medicine may even expire before the expiration date. The expiration date on most medications is 2 years after the drug is manufactured. No one knows for sure how long medications are effective after the expiration date. To be safe, discard.
3. Take Charge and Keep a Diary
It's easy to forget! A consistent routine will help you keep your medications organized throughout the day. Use a memory aid to help you--a calendar, pill box or your own system. Read the label and instructions each time you take a medication or fill your pill box so you can avoid mistakes. Learn about your drugs and keep a diary of any side effects you notice. Bring your drug diary to each doctor visit. Many seniors have several doctors, help each physician coordinate your total medication regime with your diary. Show your diary to the pharmacist when you refill or get a new prescription. The US Department of Health and Human Services recommends a list of your medications should include:
-- The name of the medication or herbal supplement
-- How much you take (read the prescription bottle and copy down the instructions)
-- When you take it (morning, afternoon, night)
-- The condition you take the medication for
Adding a list of side effects to your diary along with a list of each of your doctors, their specialty and contact numbers will give you and your providers a valuable tool to help you manage your medications.
