Acne is an inflammatory condition that causes pus-filled blemishes to appear on the skin. Acne blemishes can occur anywhere on the body, including the face, neck, chest and back. Back acne can be difficult to treat because it is constantly being rubbed by clothing, causing the skin to become more irritated and inflamed than normal. In order to eliminate back acne quickly and effectively, it is important to use products that will kill off acne-causing bacteria while preventing the skin from becoming more irritated.

Use a Gentle Cleanser

Most cleansers and soaps contain chemical ingredients that can cause the skin to become irritated and inflamed. For skin affected by acne, using a standard soap or cleanser can exacerbate the irritation caused by the blemishes. Back acne should be cleansed with a soap or cleanser that is gentle and formulated for sensitive skin, which will not contain preservatives, dyes and artificial perfumes that can irritate the skin. The back should be cleansed gently two times per day, using a light touch. Avoid scrubbing the skin, which can irritate acne breakouts and cause inflammation.

Use a 10 Percent Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Back acne can be more stubborn than facial acne; therefore, it is important to use a higher-strength acne-fighting cream than is used on the face. Ten percent benzoyl peroxide cream can be too strong to use on facial skin, but is helpful in clearing body and back acne. A quarter-sized amount of the benzoyl peroxide cream should be applied twice per day after cleansing the skin. It is important to apply the cream gently and not to rub it in too vigorously. This can be done by applying the cream with a soft washcloth attached to a back scratcher. The washcloth can be tied onto the back scratcher with a rubber band or hair tie, then the cream can be applied to the washcloth. This will enable the cream to be applied easily to the effected areas without rubbing it in.

Use an Oil-Free Body Lotion

In order to keep the back clear while still keeping the skin soft and supple, it is important to properly hydrate the skin using an oil-free body lotion. Using an oil-free lotion will keep the skin soft without clogging the pores. A quarter-sized amount of oil-free body lotion should be applied gently two times per day after using the benzoyl peroxide cream. You can apply the lotion using your hands, or a washcloth attached to a back scratcher. Avoid rubbing the lotion in.
