Having stamina means you will have both physical and mental resistance. Rather than having peaks of energy, people with stamina are able to stay more focused and maintain a steady level of activity throughout the day. They are also able to do more without getting fatigued or losing concentration. Achieving stamina requires time and a series of changes in diet and lifestyle. For most people, there's no single answer to what works, but it's instead a combination of things that provide the best results.
Step 1
Take on sports or activities that require you to maintain a steady level of effort for a long period of time. These include swimming, walking or jogging, biking or even dancing. Exercise steadily, at the same pace, three to four times a week.
Step 2
Build your exercise intensity. Any type of exercise will increase your cardiovascular and muscular capacity, but by increasing the length, intensity or frequency of your workouts over time, your body will become stronger and your stamina will increase. Try adding 10 minutes to your running or biking routine or a few pounds to your weight training routine every two weeks to improve your stamina without risking injury.
Step 3
Lose weight. Being overweight causes you to get tired more easily. It can affect your heart's capacity and make it more difficult for you to exercise, thus affecting your stamina because of inactivity. Even a few pounds can make a difference in your overall stamina.
Step 4
Eat a balanced diet that includes all food groups. Diets that restrict certain foods, especially carbohydrates, can lead to weakness. To stay energized throughout the day, eat frequent small meals and make sure you eat a variety of foods so you don't miss out on essential vitamins and minerals.
Step 5
Sleep more. Your stamina will go down if you frequently skip on your seven to nine hours of sleep. Try to go to bed at the same time every day and spend a few minutes before bedtime trying to destress so you can then sleep better through the night. Make sure the room is dark, at a comfortable temperature and as quiet as possible.
Step 6
Consider adding supplements to your diet. A simple multivitamin can help you get the nutrients you're missing if your diet leaves something to be desired. A study that appeared in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that coenzyme Q10 and carnitine can help with energy production. They can both be found in the form of tablets at health food stores and vitamin shops.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid coffee and other stimulants as much as possible. They will provide a quick burst of energy but you will crash a short time after. Restrict your consumption of coffee to 1 or 2 cups a day.
