People of all ages can develop acne breakouts, including adults who are no longer experiencing the hormonal surges of puberty. Although there are many types of acne-fighting products on the market, many of these products are not effective enough to eliminate adult acne breakouts. In order to clear adult acne effectively, it is important to use skincare products that are powerful and designed to clear acne quickly.

2.5 Percent Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Benzoyl peroxide cream eliminates acne breakouts by killing the bacteria inside the pores that allow acne to develop. there are many different strengths of benzoyl peroxide cream, including 2.5 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent concentrations. For adult acne sufferers, it is important to clear acne without exacerbating wrinkles. For this reason, it is important to use larger amounts of the lowest strength benzoyl peroxide cream. A dime-sized amount of the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream should be applied to the skin twice per day. If the skin becomes red, inflamed, peels, or burns, stop using the cream and consult a dermatologist about the possibilities of a contact allergy to the cream.

Salicylic Acid Gel

Salicylic acid gel gets rid of acne by helping regulate the skin cell turnover, which sloughs off old skin cells and develops new skin cells at a more even rate. This helps prevent the pores from becoming clogged, and allows the skin's oil production to become balanced over time. Salicylic acid gel will not cause the side effects that are typical of stronger concentrations of benzoyl peroxide creams, such as redness or peeling. This makes them helpful in treating acne in adults because it will avoid over-drying the skin and worsening wrinkles while it clears up acne breakouts. A dime-sized amount of salicylic acid gels should be applied twice per day.

Tea Tree Oil

Many times, aging skin can be too sensitive to use benzoyl peroxide creams or salicylic acid gel. For these adult sufferers, tea tree oil can be used as an effective alternative that the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital suggests can clear acne just as effectively as chemically-based creams and gels. In order to use tea tree oil effectively, it must first be diluted into a 5 percent solution, which can be accomplished by combining five to six drops into 8 oz. of water. Diluted tea tree oil can be applied to the skin up to three times per day.
