While bicycles are typically very sturdy pieces of equipment, with normal wear and tear they will require maintenance. You may need to replace your bike's handlebars occasionally, due to damage or simply because a desire to try something new. Changing handlebars is an easy process which can be done with little difficulty.

Step 1

Securely clamp your bicycle into a sturdy repair stand.

Step 2

Carefully remove the grips on the handlebar. Bicycles typically have a plug on the end of the handlebar to prevent dirt buildup. This can be removed with a screwdriver. Loosen the clamps that hold the grip and slide it off.

Step 3

Remove the brakes and shifters. There is a clamp that should be held on by a bolt. Use an Allen wrench to loosen the bolt but don't remove completely. Slide the brakes and shifters off.

Step 4

Remove other accessories you may have on your bike like reflectors. These can usually be easily removed by loosening or cutting the straps.

Step 5

Use a screwdriver to remove the bolts on the plate that hold the handlebars to the steering tube. Carefully remove the plate and handlebars, and store or dispose of them.

Step 6

Insert the new bars as well as the brakes and shift levers. For similar types of bars, the cables and housing should be fine. If you have switched to a different type of bars, the housing and cables may need to be shortened.

Step 7

Adjust the bars to your desired angle and tighten the stem clamp bolt. Replace the bar ends and grips. Review your bike to make sure everything is securely in place.
