Soccer is the world's most popular game, and millions of people play it worldwide. Being a successful soccer player requires commitment and effort. Whether you play in a recreational setting, or aspire to play soccer at the top level, you should commit the time and energy needed to succeed in this competitive sport. Individual Training
Practice alone by rehearsing your dribbling and moves unopposed. Practice passing and shooting techniques by hitting the ball against a wall. Hitting the ball against a wall at differing heights and angles allows you to work on first touch. To focus your practice, select a skill to work on each day and do drills that practice that specific skill.
Group Training
Whether you are training with a team or a group of friends, play as often as possible. Even a social soccer game will increase your fitness and develop your touch on the ball. Communication
Communication is vital to a successful soccer player. When defending, communicate to teammates clearly if you are pressuring the attacker with the ball, or alert teammates if an open attacker is in their vicinity. On offense, speak loudly to let teammates know where you are and if you want a pass. Always use communication positively, letting teammates know of situations beforehand and avoiding complaining after an error has been made. Take responsibility to motivate teammates and keep their heads up after an error in order to be a truly positive presence on your team.
Fitness
A high level of physical fitness is required to be a successful soccer player. Playing regularly will help develop your fitness base, and fitness training should be continued in the off season. Interval training, such as the Fartlek training method, best simulates the demands of a soccer game. Play or exercise three or four days per week to maintain fitness.
Supplemental Coaching
Learn from a variety of coaches and study different techniques. Supplemental coaching clinics are available in specific topics, such as dribbling or possession. Attending a week-long summer camp can help develop your soccer game and introduce you to new ideas.
