Dark spots on the scalp are usually caused by excess sweating, an oily scalp or too much sun. The dark spots are caused by a decline in hormones that regulate melanin. When your skin is exposed to the sun for too long, UV rays break down the collagen and elastin in your cells, making your skin rougher and easier for melanin to build up. An increase of melanin in the skin is what causes the dark spots on your scalp. People over 50 are usually the most likely to get dark spots on their scalp. You can clear the dark spots on your skin by the right cleaning regiment, avoiding the sun and taking the right vitamins and medicine.
Step 1
Use skin cream. You can get a good over-the-counter skin cream at the pharmacy that will reduce the brown spots on your scalp. Make sure the cream contains hydroquinone, vitamin C and antioxidants such as retinol. Otherwise, your dermatologist can prescribe a medication with vitamin A such as Retin-A. Retin-A will fade the dark spots on your scalp by stimulating the growth of new cells. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester recommends prescriptions with retinoids, a mild steroid that may gradually fade the dark spots on your scalp over the course of a few months.
Step 2
Use buttermilk. Buttermilk is filled with lactic avid, which will reduce the dark spots on your scalp. Buttermilk increases the rate of cell reproduction, regenerating and revitalizing your skin. The faster your skin regenerates, the faster the dark spots on your scalp will disappear. Buy fresh buttermilk from the store, soak a cloth in the buttermilk and rub your scalp with the cloth. Leave it on for about 15 minutes before washing off with warm water. You can do this up to two times per day.
Step 3
Keep out of the sun. Apply sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 several times throughout the day. Wear sunglasses and a hat. Staying out of the sun will reduce the dark spots on your scalp and prevent new ones from forming.
Step 4
Rub lemon juice on your scalp around the brown areas and let it sit on your scalp all night long. Do not bleach your scalp; bleach will lighten your skin tone and the dark spots will become more visible. The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland recommends using a cotton ball with lemon juice on the dark spots on your scalp two times a day. Lemon juice is a natural way to get rid of the brown pigmentation.
Step 5
Exfoliate. Exfoliation is a natural way to get rid of your dead skin. Dead skin cells contain most of the pigmentation that makes your scalp dark. Exfoliation will go a long way to reducing the dark spots on your scalp. A dermatologist can also perform a microdermabrasion, where a vacuum with intense pressure scrubs fine aluminum oxide crystals across your skin. Those crystals reduce the dark spots on your skin by removing the first layer of your skin.
Step 6
Get laser therapy. A laser will help reduce the brown spots on your scalp with an intense beam of light. The light absorbs red blood cells that carry oxygen and melanin, but keeps the healthy cells in place. The laser penetrates your skin, breaking down damaged cells and tissue. After the damaged cells are destroyed, the skin begins to repair itself and heal, generating new cells without the melanin that makes your skin dark. However, these treatments cost thousands of dollars and must be done several times.
