Celery is a vegetable that belongs to the Umbelliferae family. Celery is edible raw or cooked and is typically 12 to 16 inches in length. This low-calorie, low-fat vegetable provides multiple health benefits. Celery is an excellent source of vitamin C, contains compounds that help lower blood pressure, is a natural diuretic and helps prevent cancer.

Vitamin C

One cup of celery contains 14 percent of the daily recommendation for vitamin C. Vitamin C supports functioning of the immune system and reduces cold symptoms. Vitamin C found in celery helps fight free radicals that trigger inflammation in the body, therefore reducing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C reduces the risk of stroke, cancer and heart disease.

Blood Pressure

According to the Whole Foods website, celery contains phthalides, active compounds that relax the muscles around the arteries, allowing blood vessels to dilate and reducing the blood pressure flowing through them. Phthalides reduce stress hormones that contribute to tightening and constriction of the arteries. One cup of celery contains 9.84 percent of the recommended intake for potassium, 4.8 percent of calcium and 3.3 percent of the daily recommendation of magnesium. These three minerals all aid in blood pressure reduction.

Fluid Balance

Celery seeds are a natural diuretic. They contain potassium and sodium, both essential for fluid balance and regulation. The combination of potassium stimulates urination and helps the body rid itself of excess fluids. Celery is a natural electrolyte replacement that helps restore bodily fluids after a sweaty workout, according to the Every Nutrient website.

Cancer

Celery contains coumarins, active compounds that enhance and promote the health of white blood cells. White blood cells help target and reduce harmful cells in the body that contribute to cancer development. Acetylenics, another compound found in celery, help stop tumor growths.

While celery may taste the best during the summer seasons, it is available throughout the entire year. One cup of celery contains 19 calories, 2g of fiber, .9g of protein and less than .2g of fat. A filling and low-calorie food, celery contributes to dietary fiber intake and feelings of satiety.
