Approximately 10 to 15 percent of couples are thought to be infertile, according to the Mayo Clinic. Male infertility is a factor in conception problems about 50 percent of the time. A man may be infertile due to an abnormal production of sperm and/or insufficient delivery of sperm. In some cases, the inability to impregnate a woman has to do with certain environmental factors, or health and lifestyle issues. There are a number of herbs which may be used for male fertility, but their effectiveness is uncertain.
Ginseng
Ginseng contains complex carbohydrates called saponins or ginsengsines. Panax ginseng is a popular treatment for infertility in traditional Chinese medicine. It may help increase testosterone levels, sperm count as well as sperm mobility. Panax ginseng may also increase penile firmness and erection length.
Sarsaparilla
Sarsaparilla is any of a number of prickly climbing plants that have scented roots and heart-shaped leaves. Sarsaparilla contains substances which resemble the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone progesterone. The herb is believed to increase sperm count, especially when taken with ginseng.
Astralagus
Astralagus (Astragalus membronaceous) has been used in traditional Chinese and East Indian medicine for its immune-enhancing effects. It is often used as an herbal remedy to treat male infertility. Astralagus is thought to increase the likelihood of conception by improving sperm motility and concentration. The National Institutes of Health reports that astragalus is most often used in combination with other herbs, including ginseng and licorice.
