Diners find themselves making choices at the ordering counter of fast food restaurants all over the country. Even if they're visiting a Subway restaurant and thinking they've made a healthier choice than if they were to visit McDonald's or Taco Bell, they could wipe out the healthy choice if they order the wrong entree. It's not easy to make the right choice, but if you do a little research, you can safely eat at a fast food restaurant without worrying about too many calories.
Burgers
A McDonald's premium grilled chicken club sandwich clocks out at 570 calories and 21 grams of fat while the Quarter Pounder tops out at 410 calories and 19 grams of fat. The chicken sandwich would seem to be the healthier choice, but the ingredients included with the chicken increase the calorie count for this sandwich.
Sub Sandwiches
A 6-inch tuna sub from Subway's tops out at 530 calories and 31 grams of fat due to the addition of mayonnaise to the tuna. In comparison, a double roast beef sub has 360 calories and 7 grams of fat. If mustard is used instead of mayonnaise, the calorie count drops significantly.
Burritos
A Chipotle's chicken burrito weighs in at 1,169 calories and 47 grams of fat. A chicken burrito bowl from the same eatery has less than half the calories--489 calories and 22 grams of fat. The ingredients and dressing on the chicken burrito add the calories to the meal.
Ice Cream
An icy Blizzard from Dairy Queen contains 720 calories and 28 grams of fat, while a small chocolate sundae has 280 calories and only 7 grams of fat. Because of the various candies that are added to the ice cream for the Blizzard, along with whipped topping, the calorie count jumps noticeably.
Pizza
Two slices of Supreme pan pizza from Pizza Hut set your dietary progress back by 620 calories and 32 grams of fat while two slices of Thin 'n Crispy ham and pineapple pizza contribute only 360 calories and 12 grams of fat. The additional dough for the pan pizza, along with all of the toppings, make this a poor choice for those who want to stick to a diet while eating out.
Turkey Burger
Diners might view turkey burgers as healthy and low in fat. A turkey burger from Ruby Tuesday will add 1,171 calories and 58 grams of fat to your frame. Instead, choose the top sirloin accompanied by baby green beans and portabella mushrooms, clocking in at 464 calories and 24 grams of fat. The turkey burger has been fried on the grill and is accompanied by a fat-laden salad dressing. The large serving of French fries on the side doesn't help.
Chalupa
The Baja beef chalupa from Taco Bell carries 410 calories and 27 grams of fat while the Grilled Steak soft taco has only 320 calories and 9 grams of fat. The beef for the chalupa has been fried, and it has cheese, refried beans and Spanish rice inside as well.
Frescata
A Roasted Turkey and Swiss Frescata, accompanied by a medium serving of French fries and a medium cola has 1,100 calories and 40 grams of fat. In contrast, ordering the Ultimate Chicken Grill sandwich with a side salad and a medium iced tea will only set you back by 540 calories and 22 grams of fat.
