Contestants on the reality TV show The Biggest Loser are challenged to lose large amounts of weight by changing their dietary and exercise habits. Because of the popularity of this show, the trainers Bob and Jillian have developed exercise materials for those who want to lose weight and get fit at home. The workout routines are intense, requiring participants--and contestants--to expend high amounts of energy as they work to lose the extra weight they've gained.
Circuit Training
Circuit training consists of an intense cardio routine combined with an intensive weight workout. The Biggest Loser circuit training is a "fast-paced weight training" routine where you move quickly from one routine to the next without a break in between.
Biggest Loser contestants or people exercising at home with the Biggest Loser participate in small-group sessions. Each "station" or activity lasts approximately 15 seconds. Equipment used in circuit training can include exercise bands, weight machines, dumbbells and calisthenics, according to Liz Neporent, M.A.
Circuit training is fast-paced and participants are less likely to become bored. This is a good form of exercise for those who are short on time for a daily workout. Because it is such a fast-paced class, the instructor may not have time to check every student's form, which could lead to injury.
Jogging and Running
Jogging is an exercise activity that can easily be adapted to your needs and goals. Whether you're running to lose weight, reduce stress or prepare for an upcoming race, adding jogging or running to your workout plans can be adapted to the point where you can run as a member of a group or on your own.
Equipment includes a good pair of running shoes, a good surface to run on and, for women, a supportive sport bra. Runners have to take the time to warm up and cool down correctly to avoid injury and soreness, according to Liz Neporent, M.A.
The advantages of running include being able to run almost anywhere and at any time, being able to run outdoors or on a treadmill inside if the weather is bad. The disadvantages include injuries from overusing joints and developing shin splints.
Boot Camp Extreme
The Extreme Boot Camp workout includes the Power 90 Extreme workout. The exercises in this set of routines make you sweat and work your muscles. The trainer in this series, Tony Horton, helps participants to slim down or bulk up, depending on individual goals.
This workout series is designed to help you achieve results in approximately 90 days. Your can challenge your body with several workouts and routines so you won't get bored.
Aerobic Cardio
In the Turbo Jam, you'll be challenged with cardio kickboxing and body sculpting workouts that are set to dance tunes. This workout is designed to help you burn more calories and work all areas of your body, particularly your abdominal area.
Trainer Chalene Johnson worked with Olympic fighters, nationally ranked kickboxers, group exercise experts and black belt experts to design a workout program that would be effective and safe for a wide range of participants.
