Toprol XL is the brand name of metoprolol, available as a prescription only. It belongs to a class called the beta blockers, which are used for the treatment of high blood pressure and angina (chest pain). It is also used to reduce the mortality rate or hospitalization rate of individuals who have congestive heart failure (CHF). This medication works by blocking the beta receptors in the cells of the heart. Beta receptors respond to chemicals that make the heart beat faster; beta blockers will prevent this and decrease the rate and force of the heart rate. Several side effects are associated with Toprol XL.
Dizziness
One of the most common side effects of Toprol XL is dizziness. It may occur in up to 10 percent of users. Fatigue is also seen in about 1 to 10 percent of individuals, according to the "Drug Information Handbook." Use caution when driving and avoid engaging in activities that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you. Headache may be seen, as well and can be treated with a pain killer such as acetaminophen. As your body adjusts to the medication, these effects should begin to diminish.
Hypotension and Bradycardia
Hypotension, or low blood pressure, may be seen in up to 27 percent of individuals on Toprol XL. Bradycardia, or extreme slowing of the heart rate may also occur and is seen in about 2 to 16 percent of people, reports the "Drug Information Handbook." Be careful when changing from lying or sitting position to standing position or when climbing up stairs. If these symptoms are persistent, contact your healthcare provider.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is seen with the administration of Toprol XL. This may be associated with nausea and vomiting as well as flatulence and abdominal pain. Eat small meals throughout the day and drink plenty of fluids. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy may help with the nausea and vomiting. If the diarrhea is persistent, seek medical attention immediately.
Depression
The "Drug Information Handbook" states that depression may occur in about 5 percent of people on Toprol XL. The symptoms of depression will improve as your body adjusts to the medication. If you have unusual thoughts or suicidal ideation, contact a health care provider.
Pruritus and Rash
Pruritus, or itchiness, and rash may be present in users of Toprol XL. About 5 percent of people experience these adverse effects. If they worsen or are accompanied by swelling in the hands or face, chest tightness or difficulty breathing, it may be a sign of a severe allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical attention as these symptoms may be life-threatening.
