Estrace (estradiol) Cream is a vaginal prescription medication used to resolve vaginal symptoms associated with menopause, such as vaginal dryness, itching or burning. This medication mimics the naturally occurring hormone estrogen and is vaginally administered through the use of a vaginal applicator. Visit your doctor to discuss Estrace Cream side effects before you begin treatment with this medication.
Vaginal Irritation
Vaginal application of Estrace Cream may cause irritation within the sensitive genital tissue. You may experience increased vaginal discomfort, pain or dryness after applying Estrace Cream. You may also experience breast swelling or tenderness while using this medication. Such side effects are typically temporary, but may not subside until treatment with this medication is completed.
Stomach Upset
Estrace Cream may cause stomach upset. You may experience nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite while receiving treatment with Estrace Cream. Speak with your doctor immediately if you develop abdominal swelling or tenderness or severe episodes of vomiting.
Headache
Headache symptoms may also develop as a side effect of this medication. Pain associated with headache can be severe (migraine) and may be accompanied by additional side effects, including dizziness or lightheadedness. If you experience persistent headache symptoms in conjunction with vomiting, faintness or vision problems, contact your doctor immediately.
Acne
Treatment with Estrace Cream may cause skin alterations to occur. You may develop acne or abnormal patches of discolored skin across the body. Acne is a skin condition characterized by the appearance of small red, irritated, inflamed and pus-filled lesions on the skin. Such skin reactions to Estrace Cream can occur on any region of the body and may subside with recurrent use of this medication.
Decreased Libido
While receiving treatment with Estrace Cream, you may observe a decrease in your sexual drive or desire (libido). You may find it difficult to become aroused or to orgasm as usual. Such side effects may also be accompanied by depression, which can cause you to feel constantly sad, guilty or worthless. Speak with your doctor if such side effects have a negative impact on your intimate relationships.
Menstrual Changes
Use of Estrace Cream may cause menstrual changes to occur. If you are premenopausal, you may notice that the duration or heaviness of your menstrual cycle changes during Estrace Cream treatment. If you are either premenopausal or postmenopausal, you may also experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, which should be discussed with a doctor or gynecologist as soon as possible.
