Metformin HCL 500 mg is a prescription oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your body is not responsive to insulin, and blood sugar levels are uncontrolled. High blood sugar can result in significant symptoms, such as nerve pain, in addition to chronic disease, such as heart disease. According to Drugs.com, metformin is sometimes used in combination with other diabetes medications to control blood sugar. However, metformin is never used to treat type 1 diabetes. As with all medications, you should be aware of the possible side effects, and alert your doctor if you experience them.

Low Blood Sugar

Low blood sugar is a side effect that can occur with most diabetes medications. This occurs because your body is either too sensitive to the metformin or the dose is too large. In addition, you may be taking in lower levels of sugar, which may contribute to this side effect. Look for anxiety, behavior changes similar to being drunk, blurry vision, cold sweats, confusion, clammy skin, difficulty concentrating, drowsiness, excessive hunger, increased heart rate, headache, nausea, nervousness, nightmares, restless sleep, shakiness and slurred speech, states the Mayo Clinic. Use extreme caution when driving or operating heavy machinery when taking metformin. Schedule an appointment with your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

Weakness

According to the Mayo Clinic, a side effect of metformin use is a lack of loss of strength. Strength will likely first be reduced in your fingers, hands, toes and feet. You may also notice weakness in larger muscle groups.

Electrolyte Disturbances

Metformin may result in electrolyte disturbances that cause your body to function in an acidic environment, according to the Mayo Clinic. This is called lactic acidosis, and can be sudden and severe. Look for diarrhea; fast, shallow breathing; muscle pain or cramping; and unusual sleepiness, tiredness or weakness. Seek immediate medical treatment if you are experiencing these signs of lactic acidosis.

Other Common Symptoms

Other side effects associated with using metformin include loss of appetite, heartburn, metallic taste, stomachache, vomiting and weight loss. Your doctor may be able to adjust your dosage or change your medication regimen.
