Migraine pain is more significant than that associated with a typical headache. Several other symptoms can accompany the pain, including nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to lights and sounds. There are a number of ways to treat and prevent migraines. Patients may find books to be a great resource in providing inspiration as well as instruction on how to deal with this health condition. Relieving pain is often the focus of such books but some include helpful messages about living with the condition and how others have managed to maintain success despite migraines.

Migraines Be Gone

Kelsie Kenefick provided migraine sufferers with an award-winning book called, "Migraines Be Gone." The book provides a step-by-step plan for balancing the nervous system to prevent and treat migraine pain. Her seven-step plan has been clinically proven to be effective and has received high remarks from Dr. Merle Diamond, of the Diamond Headache Clinic. Kenefick guides readers through steps aimed at changing the thought process, including removing the helpless feelings experienced. Instead, she instructs patients to become empowered with her book to focus on mind-body control. The key is positive self-talk and affirmations aimed at reprogramming the mind. Her method is said to take several months of practice to become effective.

Heal Your Headache

In his book,"Heal Your Headache: the 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain," Dr. David Buchholz discusses the breakthrough concept that nearly all headaches are some form of migraine. Buchholz explains that a migraine is actually a built-in reaction that causes other types of headaches, including symptoms that are associated with the migraine. In just three steps he offers a great deal of information about pain medications, trigger elimination and improving pain threshold. Readers may find the concept of avoiding medications a bit hard to swallow, but Buchholtz points out supporting evidence that drugs only increase the chances of rebound headaches. His overall goal is to help patients to increase pain tolerance so when headaches do occur they are easier to live with.

Conquering Your Migraine

The book, "Conquering Your Migraine: The Essential Guide to Understanding and Treating Migraines for all Sufferers and Their Families" was written by Seymour Diamond, a headache expert from the Diamond Headache Clinic. Described as a manual, the text fully describes the different types of migraines and offers details on nearly all forms of effective treatment. Based on vital headache research, Diamond elaborates on the utility of common prescription drugs as well as alternative medications. He explains some complications of migraines, such as issues specific to women suffering from premenstrual syndrome or menopause.
