Ativan, the brand name of lorazepam, is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called the benzodiazepines. In the oral form, Ativan is used for the management of anxiety disorders or the short-term relief of anxiety. It is also available as an injection for the treatment of seizures. Like all medications, Ativan has the potential to cause many side effects. It is important to know what the side effects are so you may know what to expect.
Sedation

Drive with caution and avoid engaging in activities that require alertness. Be careful when climbing up stairs or standing from a sitting or lying position. These effects may decrease as your body adjusts to the medication. Talk to your physician if you have any concerns.

Effects on the Brain

Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by restlessness and the inability to remain still. About 5 percent of users can experience this adverse effect. Headache may also be present in up to 10 percent of people. Inform your physician if these side effects become persistent.
Nausea and Vomiting

Some individuals may also experience changes in appetite, which in turn may lead to changes in weight. If you have any doubts or questions, consult your physician. Collaborating with a physician can help you manage any potential side effects of this drug.
