Blackheads can appear on the skin when pores become clogged with oil, sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. Although these comedones are referred to as blackheads, they are actually brown due to the oxidization of the impurities inside the pores. There are over-the-counter skincare treatments that can eliminate blackheads, but they often contain strong chemical ingredients that can cause the skin to become red and inflamed. Luckily, there are natural home remedies to remove blackheads.
Step 1
Soak the skin with a purgative oil to help loosen blackheads. Smooth 2 tbsp. of castor oil onto the skin, and use your fingers to massage it in lightly for two minutes. Soak a washcloth in steaming hot water, and wring it out when it is cool enough to touch. Drape the washcloth over the skin, letting the steam penetrate the pores. When the washcloth cools, use it to wipe off the oil. Repeat twice per day.
Step 2
Exfoliate the skin with a natural scrub to help slough off blackheads and dead skin. Pour 1 tbsp. of baking soda into your hand, and drizzle 1 tsp. of water into it. Spread the baking soda paste onto wet skin, and massage it in using small, circular finger movements. After two minutes, rinse off the scrub. Repeat twice per day after soaking the skin with oil.
Step 3
Apply a tea tree clay mask to absorb excess oil and pull out impurities from the pores. In a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp. of French green clay with two drops of tea tree oil. Spread the mask onto your skin, and allow it to remain there until it dries. Rinse off the mask with warm water. Apply the mask once per week. In addition to pulling out impurities, the tea tree oil in the mask kills bacteria that can help form blackheads.
Tips and Warnings
- In addition placing a washcloth on the skin, you can splash your face with hot water or lean over a bowl of steaming water for at least five minutes to allow the castor oil to pull impurities from your skin and clear blackheads. Baking soda is an alkaline substance that is also mildly abrasive, and it can remove blackheads and dead skin from the face after the skin has been softened by castor oil. It is important to use a light touch and to move the fingers in slow, circular motions.
