Supermarkets and department stores are full of skin care products touted to make the skin look youthful and vibrant, and to clear skin breakouts. Unfortunately, many of these products can contain harsh chemical ingredients that can cause the skin to become overly dry, irritated and inflamed. Luckily, you can create effective and helpful skin care products right in your own home by combining natural substances that help cleanse, tone and tighten the skin without irritating it.
Step 1
Make your own homemade facial cleanser. In a small bowl, combine 2 tbsp. of baking soda with 2 tbsp. of ground, raw oats. Pour 2 tsp. of water onto the mixture, and spread it onto moistened skin. Massage the mixture in for three to four minutes, then rinse off the skin thoroughly with warm water. Use this natural facial cleanser once per day.
Step 2
Make your own homemade facial mask. In a small bowl, whip together two egg whites with 1 tbsp. olive oil. Spread the mixture onto your skin, and allow it to remain there for at least 15 minutes. Wipe off the mask with a hot washcloth. Use this homemade facial mask once per day.
Step 3
Make your own facial toner. In an empty spray bottle, combine 1 tbsp. aloe vera gel, 8 oz. of witch hazel, and five drops of tea tree oil. Spray the skin liberally after cleansing, and allow the skin to dry naturally. Use this homemade toner twice per day.
Tips and Warnings
- When creating a homemade cleanser, it is important to select ingredients that are both cleansing and mildly abrasive. This will allow the cleanser to not only remove bacteria and excess oils, but to remove dead skin cells, which can cause the complexion to appear more sallow and dull. A skin mask of egg whites combined with olive oil can be especially helpful in toning aging skin that is effected by wrinkles and dryness. When creating a homemade toner, it is helpful to combine substances that are both soothing to the skin and able to kill bacteria that can cause skin eruptions, such as aloe vera gel and tea tree oil. Using this type of toner is helpful for people suffering from skin irritations and acne breakouts.
