Mineral oil has been used in cosmetic products for more than 100 years. It is the product of distilled petroleum, and because of its origins has been the subject of several myths and accusations by both natural product companies and advocates for mineral oil. The largest of these accusations is that mineral oil is loaded with carcinogens, but the Food and Drug Administration has cleared mineral oil as carcinogen-free, according to The Beauty Brains website. Mineral oil can be used as a face cleanser to clear away dirt and pollutants and to help protect your skin from scourges of acne and other skin problems.

Step 1

Wash your face with the facial soap you normally use. This will clean the surface to let your skin enjoy the maximum benefits of mineral oil.

Step 2

Rinse your skin with water and pat dry.

Step 3

While still damp from being washed, place a nickel- or quarter-sized dab of mineral oil into your hands. Spread it on your hands and apply to your face, rubbing over your skin for 20 to 30 seconds. Keep your eyes closed while doing this--while not toxic to your eyes, it may cause discomfort.

Step 4

Rinse with water and pat dry with a cloth or towel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Don't expect your face to feel clean and dry the way it normally does when you wash with soap. The mineral oil will make your skin look and feel oily and greasy, but that's just the consequence of washing your face with oil. It won't clog your pores or lead to an acne outbreak--if anything, it will improve your acne condition.
  • Store mineral water out of reach of children. It is potentially poisonous when consumed. Avoid using mineral oil in the shower, if you can. It blends into water and can create slippery surfaces you won't be able to see.

Things You'll Need

  • Facial soap
  • Cloth or towel
