If you want to improve your relationships with the people you care about, it's important to know the elements of effective oral communication. Communication is the key to developing deeper bonds with the people in your life because it opens the doors to better understanding of the other person while allowing you to express yourself.

Express Yourself

Effective communication begins with stating your perspective. You will never get what you want if you don't ask for it. So go ahead and express your feelings. Just be sure to be considerate of the person you are talking to, and practice assertive communication techniques. Assertive statements express your needs and wants in a healthy way that does not dominate or criticize anyone else. According to Tom G. Stevens, PhD, a professor at California State University Long Beach, assertive communication is caring, empathetic and respectful, and strives to make both parties happy. Before you communicate your needs, think about what you want to happen and how you and your partner can both mutually benefit, and be willing to compromise.

Listen Actively

Listening attentively is vital to healthy communication in any relationship, whether it's between spouses, family members or co-workers. When the other person is talking, listen carefully and do not interrupt. Listen actively by asking questions, repeating their statements, nodding and being fully engaged. Besides listening, go one step further and imagine the subject from the other person's perspective, trying to understand their point of view. Being empathetic and open-minded is key to encouraging someone to talk, as the person will be more likely to open up to you in the future if you are non-judgmental and show that you genuinely care.

Be Positive

Offering praise promotes effective communication by encouraging the other person to share. Let your partner know you appreciate her by offering compliments on things she does and says. Think about what the other person's strengths are and let them know that you are inspired by them. When in a relationship, be sure to compliment your partner's appearance, letting her know why you are attracted to her. This will build trust and appreciation in your relationship, helping to increase intimacy. If you are communicating with family members, be positive as well, which will spur them to open up more to you, helping you forge deeper bonds and understanding. Praise is also helpful for work situations, increasing morale and encouraging better communication among employees.
