The Process of Name Change in Adoption

Start with usage. While the name change process may take a while to complete, you can begin using your child's new name as soon as he is adopted. If you are only looking to change his last name, this will not be an issue. For adoptive parents who are looking to provide a new first name for their newly adopted little one, it is important to start helping him to get acclimated to his new name as soon as possible.

File a petition with your local court. The application process varies from state to state, but most states will require proof of adoption in order to process a name change for an adopted child.

Wait for the decision. A legal name change must be ordered by the court. The application must be filed and approved in order for a court order to be issued, making the name change legal.

Make changes to vital records. Once the court order has been issued and the name change is final, adoptive parents can then make changes to the vital records. Things like birth certificates, social security cards, school records, immunization records and insurance information should be updated with the child's new name.
