Pitching in fast-pitch softball is much different than pitching in baseball. The size of a softball makes it difficult to control the ball while throwing overhanded so pitches are delivered underhanded. While the top speeds of baseballs can't be reached, softballs can reach high speeds at the collegiate and professional levels. Also, the different delivery angle of a softball compared with a baseball provides a significant challenge. Pitching is a skill that takes years of intense practice to master.

Getting the Ball to the Plate

Step 1

Grip the ball in your pitching hand, with your thumb on one side and your other fingers on the other. Depending on the size of your hand, you will need two to four fingers on the back side of the ball to control it well.

Step 2

Place the foot that's on the same side as your throwing arm directly onto the pitcher's rubber, with your toes extending out in front of the rubber. Your other foot should land behind the rubber with your toes on the back of the pitcher's rubber. Your feet should be about shoulder-width apart and you should be leaning slightly forward with your body facing home plate and arms hanging loosely. Your weight should be on your front foot.

Step 3

Rock onto your back heel while swinging your arms back. This is the wind-up to your pitch.

Step 4

Bring your arms forward and together, covering the ball with your pitching glove. Swing your pitching arm up and back behind your body, making a tight circle and building speed behind the ball. Leave the glove in front of your body as you swing your arm around.

Step 5

Bring the ball to your hip and snap your wrist forward to release the ball shortly after it passes your hip.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep your eyes on the catcher's mitt throughout the pitching motion. This will improve your accuracy.
