Nasonex, known by the generic medical name of mometasone, is an anti-allergy symptom medication. It is a prescription-only medicine called a corticosteroid that is administered as a nasal spray. Nasonex can help to relieve such allergy symptoms as nasal congestion, discomfort and irritation. The Mayo Clinic states it typically is used as two sprays per nostril each day. You should consult your physician immediately if you get any severe side effects from Nasonex.
Nasal Side Effects
Nasonex can cause some severe common side effects in the nasal passages. For example, the mucus produced in your nose may contain blood when you use the medication. You also may get nosebleeds that do not relate to injuries and are otherwise unexplained. Nasonex also may cause increased nasal congestion and you may get a runny nose while taking it.
Flu-Like Symptoms
Along with the nasal problems Nasonex can induce, you may get other side effects that appear like symptoms of influenza or a common cold. A fever may occur when you take the drug, as well as chills, nausea and vomiting. If these occur suddenly when taking Nasonex, it may not be the flu, but rather side effects of the drug. Talk with your doctor to find out what the problem is since it is possible it could only be a cold, but it could be a severe side effect of mometasone.
Pain
Nasonex may induce pain in the body. This pain may not immediately be associated in your mind with the drug, but if you experience such pain while taking the medication, tell your doctor. You may experience pain in your muscles or pain in your bones. You also may find you have a headache. Drugs.com also reports pain in the chest as a potential severe side effect. Women may experience an increase in cramps and pain while they are menstruating.
Growth Suspension
A severe side effect for children who use the drug is the potential for the suppression of normal growth. This may be hard to identify in the short-term, so your physician should carefully monitor your child's reactions to the drug.
Infections and Spots
Nasonex also may cause you to get spots of white in your mouth or nose. These, Drugs.com states, are severe side effects and require immediate medical aid as soon as you notice them. Also, because corticosteroids tend to lower bodily immunity, you may be susceptible to infections from viruses while using mometasone.
