If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, it is important to call 911 to get immediate emergency medical attention. There is a higher chance for survival if emergency medical attention is sought out sooner by calling 911. Some persons experience sudden sharp symptoms, while others have a slower onset of symptoms. After a heart attack, future cardiac issues can be prevented through medication and lifestyle changes. It is important to discuss ways to prevent a heart attack with your doctor if you are at risk.

Chest Pain

Most persons experience chest pain in the middle of the chest. Sometimes it is intermittent (comes and goes), and sometimes it is a constant pain. It is very uncomfortable. Many describe this pain as "fullness" or "squeezing" in the chest. Sometimes this pain is perceived as a "burning pain" or indigestion that is not going away. This pain usually lasts five minutes or longer.

Pain in Other Parts of the Body

Some persons express that they feel pain in other parts of the body such as the jaw, back, one or both arms, or the stomach. They also might describe it as discomfort or numbness.

Shortness of Breath

Unexplained shortness of breath is another common symptom of a heart attack.

Weakness and Lightheadedness

Weakness and lightheadedness are other symptoms one might feel. Sometimes this is accompanied by a cold sweat and nausea.

Less Common Symptoms

According to Womenshealth.gov women are more likely to have the less common symptoms which are: heartburn, appetite loss, weakness, feeling tired, coughing and heart flutters. Because women's symptoms are not the commonly known symptoms, they may be less likely to seek medical attention.
