Learning how to swing the golf club correctly is a journey that most golfers start when they first pick up clubs and continues for many years. The first step in trying to swing the club the right way is learning how to grip the club. While having the correct grip on the golf club won't assure that you will build a strong and consistent swing, having an incorrect grip will assure that you won't have the correct swing.
Step 1
Take your left hand (for a right-handed golfer) and hold it about 1/2 inch below the top of the golf club. This is the first step in the overlapping grip, the most-used grip in the game of golf.
Step 2
Put the small finger of your right hand in the gap between the middle finger and forefinger of your left hand. Place both thumbs down the shaft of the club.
Step 3
Grip the club firmly, at about a "6" on a scale of 1 to 10. This is about the same as a firm handshake with a new business associate. Your left hand (top hand) should be holding the club a bit more firmly but not so tightly that your fingers start to tingle. Your grip will become tighter as you swing the club.
Step 4
Play the ball midway in your stance. Your club should hang down comfortably, with equal pressure coming from both your right and left arms. You should be able to move both your arms with ease when gripping the club correctly.
Step 5
Look down at your thumbs on the shaft of the club. If you are gripping it correctly, you will notice two Vs that are formed as you wrap your hands around the club.
Tips and Warnings
- Practice swinging with the overlapping grip at the driving range. By the time you hit a bucket of 40 balls, you should start to feel comfortable.
