Basketball is one of the most widely played games in the world. A staple of U.S. high school, college and professional sports, the game is taken up by children as young as 5 years of age and can be played by people well into their 60s. While teamwork, effort and conditioning will help a player play well, developing skills is essential for a player to improve at the game and enjoy time spent on the court.
Dribbling Coordination
Every player must know how to handle the ball. To learn how to dribble well with both hands, start off at the baseline with one basketball in each hand. Start walking toward midcourt. As you start walking, dribble the ball in your dominant hand. As you hear that ball hit the ground, with your eyes looking straight ahead, dribble the ball in your opposite hand as you continue walking. Once you get the hang of it, move from walking to trotting and eventually to running. This will help you handle the ball with greater ease.
Shooting Drills
Players have to work on their shooting every time they walk on the practice floor. Shooting needs to be taken seriously and your concentration levels need to be up when you practice shooting. Start off at the right baseline and take 10 shots, making sure you get good lift on your jump, releasing the ball just before the apex of your leap. Follow through on your shot. Concentrate on getting the ball over the front rim. Move to the right elbow and take 10 more shots, then to the top of the key, the left elbow and then the left baseline. Record how you do in a notebook and check your progress at the end of every week.
Defensive Efficiency
Play a 2-on-1 drill to improve your defense. In this game, you will play defense against two teammates. One is the point guard who will cross midcourt. He will have a teammate in the front court and their objective is to score on you. They must complete three passes before they shoot. You must hustle and contest every pass and shot. While they have the numerical advantage, you should make your goal stopping three of 10 possessions.
