Cheerleading is a popular sport and activity for many individuals. Squads are found in schools and universities to cheer on sports teams, and competitive squads often compete with complex routines combining cheers, dance and tumbling moves. Learning the cheers to chant at games or during a routine involves memorization and repetition. Cheerleaders must also learn motions that accompany the words to the cheer. A few simple techniques will help you memorize new cheers so you can cheer with confidence and enthusiasm.

Step 1

Write out all the words to a cheer on a piece of paper. Use a separate line for each phrase and be sure the words are exact. Write in bold, large print so you can see the words from a short distance. If there are motions to accompany the cheer, write them in parentheses next to each phrase.

Step 2

Read each phrase aloud. Repeat until phrasing feels natural and you can say the cheer smoothly. Long cheers can be broken up into smaller sections.

Step 3

Add the motions as you read the cheer aloud. Repeat until the words and motions start to feel natural.

Step 4

Try to repeat the words and motions from memory without looking at the words on paper. If you cannot remember something, do not guess. Look at the paper and try again. Continue until you can go through the entire cheer without looking at the words.

Step 5

Stand in front of a mirror and practice the cheer. Work on good facials and sharp movements.

Tips and Warnings

  • Search online for new cheers and chants. Many sites have videos or words to cheers that can be printed off. Try repeating the cheers while lying on your stomach. This will force you to use your diaphragm rather than only your vocal chords.
