The sport of martial arts encompasses a variety of disciplines, including karate, jujitsu, aikido, and others. No matter which of these arts you are participating in, it is important to be outfitted correctly--and this means learning how to properly tie a martial arts belt.
Step 1
Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, wearing your gi. Fold the left flap of the upper uniform over the right flap.
Step 2
Hold the belt in your right hand. Next, use your right hand to pin down the flaps of your uniform to the waist. Use your left hand to find the left end of the belt. Still using the left hand, hold the left end of the belt in the small of your back.
Step 3
While holding the belt, use your right hand to continue wrapping the remainder of the belt around the waist. Work in a clockwise direction, making sure it is wrapped over itself at least two times. Once you have reached the end of the belt, wrap it under previous layers of the belt. The end should point upwards toward the chest.
Step 4
Reach behind your back with the left hand, pulling out the left end of the belt. Pull the end down, releasing it from the wrappings, and bring it towards the front of your body. At the same time, pull up on the upper belt end with the right hand and pull down on the lower belt end, tightening the belt to a comfortable fit.
Step 5
Bring the left and right ends of the belt in front of your body, holding each end in the respective hand. Cross the left end over the right end to form an x. Wrap the left end once to the right around the right end, like with tying a bow in shoelaces. Cross the left end over the right end, forming another x. Wrap the left end once to the left around the right end. Rotate the belt as needed to bring the knot to the front of the body.
