4 Ways to Warm Up for Kundalini Yoga

1. Turn Into a Cat Cow

The word kundalini means coiled, and those who practice kundalini yoga do so to uncoil their spines and open up their chakras. Some of the Kundalini poses are challenging, and proper warm up of the spine is essential to help you achieve the postures. The cat cow pose not only warms up the spine, but it massages the kidneys and helps firm up the abdominal muscles. To do the cat cow, get on your hands and knees on your yoga mat. Inhale while your flex your spine downward while raising your head. This is the cow part of the pose. For the cat part, exhale as you flex your spine upward while lowering your head. Do both parts of this pose while keeping your arms straight, and repeat for about 2 to 3 minutes.

2. Find the Child in Me

The child pose is a good way to relax the spine and to warm up for your Kundalini practice. Sit on your heels with your knees wide open on your yoga mat. Gently place your forehead on the mat in front of your knees while resting your arms down at your sides on the mat. Relax completely focusing on your breathing. This pose helps with blood flow and is good as a follow up for poses that flex your spine in a backward motion. Stay in this pose for about 2 minutes.

3. Flutter Me Happy

One way to stimulate Kundalini and stretch your hips and pelvic region is the butterfly pose. Sit on your mat and bring your heels together and toward your pelvic area. Hold your feet with your hands and put your elbows between your legs. Pull your heels as close to you as you can without pain. Gently bounce your legs like butterfly wings. Do this for about 2 or 3 minutes.

4. Twist but Don't Shout

Relax your whole body by standing in tadasana, or the mountain pose. Breathe deeply until you feel the tension leave your body. Relax your arms at your sides and shake them to loosen them. Then begin swinging your arms loosely from front to back allowing them to wrap your body as they swing. Repeat this move about 10 times and return to tadasana. Stand for about 2 minutes, concentrating on your breathing. Once you open, stimulate your kundalini and open your chakras, you will feel a renewal of your energy.
