Inline skating is a popular recreational activity for many children and adults. It is often used as a form of exercise, and many people also participate in inline hockey roller skating. But no matter what you'll be using your skates for, it is crucial to learn how to stop. The T-stop and Power Slide techniques are two popular techniques of stopping on inline racing skates.

Step 1

Learn to stop using the T-stop technique. Begin skating at a reasonable pace, keeping your knees bent with both feet facing forward. Transfer your weight to the dominant foot. Place you other foot perpendicular to the dominant one, making sure that it is behind your dominant foot---otherwise your skates will collide, causing a fall. This makes an "L" or "T" shape. Apply pressure with your back foot, creating friction. This will allow you to stop.

Step 2

Learn to stop using the Power Slide technique. Begin skating at a medium speed, and gradually increase speed as your technique improves. Lean into the inside as you make a sharp turn. Stretch your outside leg out, letting the skate slide---but make sure to keep the skate on the ground. Allow the inside skate to rotate, becoming perpendicular to the outside skate. Apply pressure on the outside skate to come to a stop.

Step 3

Practice each of these techniques until you have perfected them both. T-stops are typically used by beginning skaters, while Power Slides are used by more advanced skaters, or those who must rapidly stop or change directions.
