Due to a variety of reasons, mainly the aging of the baby boomer generation, there are a plethora of anti-aging skin products available. They are part of a multibillion dollar industry that promises the revitalization of aging skin; however, not all products are created equal. It is important to know that the most expensive product is not necessarily the best.

Contain Sunscreens

The best anti-aging skin product on the marketplace, according to the dermatology site Skincarephysicians.com, is found in sunscreens. Sunscreens can protect us and prevent any further skin damage caused by harmful ultraviolet rays. The best results can be obtained by using a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Sunscreens can be used as is and/or applied underneath makeup. Both the Mayo Clinic and Skincarephysicians.com recommend using sunscreens on any exposed skin when sun exposure will occur. Sunscreens can also be added to anti-aging skin products including moisturizers, serums, makeup and creams.

Contain Moisturizers

Moisturizers need to be an essential element of any anti-aging skin care routine claims Skincarephysicians.com. As we age, skin loses its capability to produce the same amount of moisture as in younger years. This moisture needs to be replaced so skin can regain its youthful tone, and the effects of aging can be diminished. An anti-aging skin product that can accomplish these goals is found in a moisturizer. A moisturizer can help to seal water in the skin cells, states Skincarephysicians.com. The Mayo Clinic says that moisturizers are good products for "masking tiny lines and creases" on a temporary basis. This is due to the moisturizer's increased hydration helping to diminish the appearance of those fine lines. Applying a moisturizer prior to bedtime can help skin repair itself states Skincarephysicians.com.
Moisturizers can also contain a variety of anti-aging skin care ingredients. Agenotes.com says that those containing vitamin C may stimulate the skin's ability to produce collagen. Collagen is known for tightening skin.

Contain Proven Active Ingredients

The best anti-aging skin products will contain scientifically proven active ingredients. These ingredients have undergone extensive laboratory testing to prove they can provide anti-aging effects. According to the Mayo Clinic and Skincarephysicians.com, there are only a handful of ingredients that fall within this category. These ingredients are alpha-hydroxy acids, copper peptide, coenzyme Q10 and tea extracts. The most popular tea extract is green tea due to its high antioxidant level. The Mayo Clinic states that green tea is a common ingredient of wrinkle creams because it has been shown to improve skin health.
Retinol, a vitamin A compound, is the first scientifically proven active ingredient used in wrinkle creams, says the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin A, an antioxidant, can help neutralize free radicals that are found in skin cells. Skin cells breakdown when these free radicals are not neutralized. Once the skin cells breakdown, signs of aging skin begin to develop. These include rough skin, age spots and fine wrinkles. As compared to other anti-aging skin products, retinol can be absorbed into our skin (not all products can.) Retinol can be added to other anti-aging skin products or purchased as a cream or is available with a doctor's prescription.
