Wellbutrin, or bupropion, is a prescription strength anti-depressant medication. The drug acts as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, and it is often a preferred option to more popular anti-depressants since it does not commonly impact sexual functions or contribute to weight gain as some other medications do. Though it is generally considered a safe product by health care professionals, there are still some potential side effects patients should be aware of when considering this medication to treat depression.
Seizures
Clinical data has indicated Wellbutrin use can contribute to an increased chance of seizures. The risk increases at higher doses of the drug (patients should not exceed 450 mg/day) and also may be more likely upon starting initial treatment with the medication. The threat of seizures when using Wellbutrin can also be exacerbated by certain pre-existing medical conditions, such as liver problems or prior brain trauma/injury.
Mania or Psychotic Symptoms
Wellbutrin can trigger manic episodes in patients that are actually suffering from bipolar disorder (manic depression) rather than clinical depression. This is a potential side effect of similar anti-depressant medications as well. Paranoid feelings, suicidal behavior and hallucinations may also be experienced by certain users. Patients experiencing these types of effects while using Wellbutrin are urged to cease product use and consult their prescribing doctors immediately.
Allergic Reactions
This medication has been known to lead to severe allergic reactions in users such as rashes, hives, sores or swelling in the lips and mouth, and high fevers. Some people may also experience severe nausea, abdominal pains, shortness of breath, or symptoms similar to the flu. Discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice in the event of any such negative reactions.
Hypertension
Elevated blood pressure has been reported in some users, including patients with no prior histories of hypertension or other cardiovascular problems. This may be related to the drug's effects on dopamine levels within the brain. Based on this information, Wellbutrin may not be the preferred anti-depressant option for patients known to have previous heart-related issues.
Hepatic Issues
Wellbutrin can potentially impact liver functions, so usage should be closely monitored in patients known to have related issues, such as cirrhosis. Metabolite levels in these individuals should be evaluated on a frequent basis in order to detect or prevent hepatic impairment. Reduced medication dosage and frequency is strongly recommended in cases of this nature.
Insomnia
Some Wellbutrin users complain of sleep-related issues, particularly insomnia and feelings of increased restlessness, upon starting treatment with the drug. As such, doctors may suggest only taking the medication in the morning or early afternoon. Avoiding caffeinated drinks and maintaining a consistent sleeping schedule are additional steps that can be taken to combat these particular side effects.
